Contraception Q & A
What is contraception?
Contraception, also known as birth control, includes any method, device, procedure, or medication you use to prevent unintended pregnancies.
Women have many contraception options. The method best suited for you depends on your health needs, goals, and future pregnancy plans.
At Luxe Women's Health, Jennifer is a women’s health advocate and expert in all of the contraception options for women. She provides contraception counseling and care to help you take control of your health and your body.
What are the types of contraception?
There are many types of contraception that may work in various ways to prevent unintended pregnancies. Some of the methods available at Luxe Women's Health include:
Birth control pills
Birth control pills are a short-acting hormonal form of contraception. They contain a combination of hormones that may prevent your ovaries from releasing an egg (ovulation) or stop sperm from reaching your egg for fertilization.
Birth control injections
Like birth control pills, birth control injections contain hormones that prevent pregnancy by stopping ovulation or preventing sperm from reaching your egg.
One birth control injection prevents pregnancy for up to three months.
Intrauterine device (IUD)
The IUD is a long-acting reversible form of contraception. Jennifer places the device in your uterus, which prevents pregnancy by either stopping ovulation, preventing sperm from reaching your egg, or making it too difficult for an egg to implant itself in your uterus.
At Luxe Women's Health, Jennifer offers hormonal and non-hormonal IUDs. Once in place, the hormonal IUD prevents pregnancy for 3-5 years, while the non-hormonal IUD works for up to 10 years.
How do I know what method of contraception is best for me?
Jennifer is an experienced women’s health expert and works one-on-one with you to help you find the contraception that best fits your needs.
During your contraception counseling session, Jennifer asks detailed questions about your current and future pregnancy plans, as well as your sexual activity. She talks to you about your contraception options, and together, you decide what method makes the best choice.
In addition to preventing pregnancy, Jennifer may also talk to you about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and the steps you can take to protect yourself from contracting an infection.
